L’environnement
Stretching from Storms River Mouth on the eastern side to Mossel Bay in the West, the Garden Route takes the visitor through valleys and beaches, over mountain passes and lakes, and through the stunningly beautiful mountain scenery and dense forests.
A drive through the Garden Route is definitely one of the highlights of a holiday in South Africa.
This picturesque area extends over the Outeniqua Mountains into the Klein Karoo (Small Karoo) with it's Ostrich Farms and the unique Cango Caves. A popular destination for holidaymakers, this is one area of the country that can't be missed! The town of Knysna lies along the Knysna lagoon, which is protected by the Heads - two great sand stone cliffs that stand guard over this calm stretch of water. In old country style you can enjoy a steam train ride from Knysna to George and marvel at the spectacular scenery along the way. The forests along the Garden Route are lush, green and full of bird life. Elephants were once the kings of the Knysna jungles, but local timber men who were in search of the popular Yellowwood and Stinkwood trees, hunted them in great numbers since these beast where a great threat to them. As always they were also hunted for their ivory, and today there are only a few left (less than 3 original Knysna elephants in the whole world) They have since chosen to live deep in these forests and are seldom seen by man.
